The Sonoma County Sheriff's Office has made an arrest in what is becoming an all-too-familiar tale of deception and theft targeting the elderly in the Bay Area. Ronghe Ruan, a resident of San Leandro, was taken into custody after Sheriff Property Crime Detectives set up a sting operation with the assistance of an elderly woman who had been contacted by scammers seeking to con her out of $30,000.
Acting on the victim's cooperation, detectives surveilled the encounter and nabbed Ruan as he took possession of what he believed was a box full of cash. According to a social media post by Sonoma Sheriff, the subsequent search of Ruan and his vehicle revealed additional evidence linked to various cash scams.
Ruan faces charges including elder abuse, theft by false pretenses, conspiracy, and grand theft. This arrest highlights a disturbing rise in cash scams, particularly those aimed at vulnerable seniors.
