San Rafael is on track to add a new leafy retreat amid its urban landscape, thanks to the City Council's authorization of up to $500,000 in funds to purchase the property at 620 Canal Street, targeting a future public park and transportation improvements. According to a press release by the City of San Rafael, the 1.65-acre plot hugs the southern ridge of the San Rafael Creek and could potentially play host to a new waterfront park, along with a bicycle and pedestrian bridge to link the Canal neighborhood with the Montecito Plaza Shopping Center and San Rafael High School.
This green venture is a group endeavor, spearheaded by the Trust for Public Land, with a funding cocktail that blends city coffers, $1,350,000 in Measure A grants from the County of Marin, and a current search for philanthropic injections to bridge any fiscal shortfalls. "The partnership with the City of San Rafael, Trust for Public Land and the County of Marin is a refreshing example of the power of collaboration to get things done for the Canal Community," Supervisor Dennis Rodoni praised, per the City of San Rafael's press release. The Measure A grant from the County is slated for the Marin County Board of Supervisors' review this coming summer and would earmark the site as a perennial public park.
Canal residents navigating to nearby schools or the shopping center are relegated to a lengthy detour via Francisco Boulevard East to the Grand Avenue Bridge, adding up to an additional mile, or 20 minutes, to their routes. "This long-awaited project, prioritized by Canal families and community leaders for decades, represents more than a park or bridge, it’s a lifeline," Omar Carrera, CEO of the Canal Alliance, expressed in the City of San Rafael's press release. His emphasis on the critical importance of the public-private-community triad in realizing impactful initiatives highlights a broader dialogue on cross-sector collaboration.
