In a tragic mishap last Friday, seven rescue dogs perished when a van carrying them from Texas to New York caught fire in Illinois. Cypress Lucky Mutt Rescue, the organization handling the transport, confirmed the incident in a statement. These dogs were rescued, rehabilitated, and sent from Cypress heading to new homes with several stops planned to unite them with their adopted families.
The fire started on I-270 in Madison County, Illinois. Out of the eleven dogs on board, only four were saved by the driver, who managed to escape uninjured. According to Click2Houston, the names of those that died were not confirmed in a statement obtained by the news outlet, but the fire has been described as "fast and intense," gutting the vehicle and sealing the fate of the seven dogs.
In the wake of the catastrophe, the Cypress Lucky Mutt Rescue took to their Facebook page to express their heartache over the loss, as reported by the Houston Chronicle. "We are heartbroken to share that seven of the dogs on board did not survive," the post read. Guapo, one of the rescued dogs, suffered burns and is currently hospitalized, expected to make a full recovery.
The dogs that survived, fortunately, were reunited with their new adoptive families. Engulfed by the community's support, the rescue organization has seen an influx of positive messages and donations. Struck by the accident, the Houston-area community's outpouring of support has been significant. "Your positive messages, calls, and comments have meant the world to us," the rescue stated on their Facebook page, and for those interested in donating, they have provided their PayPal and Venmo details on their social media, as noted by the Houston Chronicle. Cypress Lucky Mutt Rescue has been active in transporting dogs from high-kill shelters and precarious situations to adoptive homes, with over 1,000 dogs moved to New York since 2020, as per their website.
