As the island breathes a cautious sigh of relief, Hawai‘i Island police's vigilant efforts have resulted in a marginal decline in DUI arrests this year.

According to a report from the Hawai‘i Police Department, the week of June 9 through June 15 saw 21 motorists handcuffed for driving under the influence.

The yearly tally, with a slight drop, stands at 432 DUI arrests, trimming down last year's count of 449 during the same time frame by 3.79 percent. Yet the island's roads bear a heavier burden, with major crashes escalating by 5.47 percent from 457 to 482 occurrences.

Amidst this surge in major crashes, the count of fatal crashes and fatalities, with solemn relief, shows a downtrend—fatal crashes at 12, resulting in 13 deaths, have seen a descent of 20 percent from the previous year's 15 fatal crashes and 17 fatalities.

The Hawai‘i Police Department reassures the public, affirming roadblocks and patrols' undeterred continuance, a constant tide washing over the islands' shores in their fight against impaired driving.
