The Hawaiʻi Police Department reached out to the community of South Kohala, seeking assistance in identifying a man they believed to be a key witness in an assault investigation from earlier this month. The case, originating from an incident on June 13, seemed to hit a crucial point as authorities circulated an image of the unnamed man, snapped by a home security camera in the vicinity of the crime.
According to the Hawaiʻi Police Department's public request broadcast prior to the identification, the witness was thought to be a ride-share driver. Descriptions detailed him as a male anywhere between 6 feet and 6 feet 3 inches tall, with a weight range of 180 to 200 pounds, sporting a mustache and goatee. Detective Aaron Yamanaka had urged anyone with information to step forward.
The community responded swiftly. Within a day of the appeal, Hawaiʻi Police Department announced they had identified the witness thanks to tips from the public. This quick resolution exemplifies the vital role that residents play in aiding law enforcement efforts and underscores the effectiveness of community and police collaboration.
The investigation continues under the watch of the Area II Juvenile Aid Section, as noted in an update from the Hawaiʻi Police Department. Moreover, detectives extended their gratitude toward the public for their crucial assistance in progressing the case. The extent to which the identified individual's testimony will influence the case remains to be seen, as the Juvenile Aid Section carries on with the proceedings.
