Springfield Police apprehended 22-year-old Angel Suastegui, a suspect in a recent armed carjacking, after a brief chase that resulted in the recovery of a loaded firearm. Last night, crime responders from various SPD units including the Neighborhood Stabilization Bureau and Firearms Investigation Unit were mobilized following the incident reported at the 2800 block of Main Street. Details shared by the Springfield Police Department's social media post confirm that two suspects, one visibly armed, forced the vehicle owner out before stealing the car.
With the aid of the Springfield Police Real-Time Analysis Center (R-TAC), officers received a photograph of the stolen vehicle, which was later spotted on Carew Street. During the attempt to apprehend the suspects, two individuals fled from the moving vehicle that eventually collided with a stationary car. Only Suastegui was caught subsequent to the chase, while the police continued their search for the second suspect, who managed to avoid capture through the night.
In his escape attempt, Suastegui discarded a firearm that was later found along his flight path. The confiscated weapon was loaded with 14 rounds, just one shy of its maximum capacity. Additional ammunition was also retrieved from Suastegui's possession, reinforcing the severity of the threat he posed. According to the police, Suastegui's rap sheet includes two prior convictions for firearm-related crimes.
The array of charges facing Suastegui is extensive, encompassing firearm-armed carjacking and a slew of other firearm violations, including carrying a loaded large-capacity firearm on a public way, as reported by the Springfield Police Department. His legal troubles are compounded by assault, battery, trespassing, and a variety of other charges. The Springfield Police Detective Bureau has taken the lead on the ensuing investigation, seeking to unravel the events that led to Thursday's episode of violence and theft.
