Commuters in St. Charles County should prepare for potential delays next week, as the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) announced a closure on eastbound Interstate 64. The left lane from Route DD/Winghaven Boulevard to Route K will be off-limits for pavement repairs. Beginning June 13 at 7 p.m., and stretching until the early hours of June 16 at 5:30 a.m., drivers will need to navigate this inconvenience. MoDOT assures that the timing for the work hinges on favorable weather conditions.
The immediate repairs on I-64 are just a prelude to grander plans. According to a statement on MoDOT's website, these fixes set the stage for the broadening of the interstate in St. Charles County – a project intended to ease the increasingly congested traffic. A third lane is to be added in each direction between Route K, and the I-70/I-64 interchange, a stretch of road that sees daily wear from travelers and commuters alike. This is part of a larger initiative dubbed the Improve I-70 Warrenton to Wentzville Project, a construction effort tentatively scheduled from 2025 to 2028.
The financial fuel for the I-64 expansion and other related infrastructure improvements comes from Missouri's FY2024 budget. Governor Parson's greenlighting of the funding provides a robust $2.8 billion in General Revenue. These funds are earmarked for a range of activities including planning, designing, and constructing additional lanes. The ambitious goal is to extend the third lane to nearly 200 miles of I-70, stretch it from Blue Springs to Wentzville – a lengthy endeavor requiring both state resources and patience from Missouri's residents.
For drivers who often use the section of I-64 set for repair, the upcoming construction may be inconvenient for now. However, the expected benefits—less traffic and better safety on I-70—could make the short-term hassle worth it. MoDOT and state officials are focusing on long-term improvements to support the region’s transportation and economy.
