Flag-waving patriots take note: a veteran-led American flag collection will take place on June 13 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for those seeking to retire their tattered stars and stripes with dignity. The annual event, serving the community outside the St. Charles County Government Administration Building, is part of a solemn tradition of respecting the nation's emblem.

Located at the intersection of North Second Street and Monroe Street, the collection hosted by the St. Charles County Veterans Best Practices Working Group, sees flags in a state of disrepair collected for proper disposal by the American Legion. "Flags get worn and torn over time—this drop-off is for flags that are out of shape and need to be respectfully retired," Sgt. Donald Van told the St. Charles County website, emphasizing the symbolic importance of the gesture.

In a convenient drive-thru system, participants can remain in their vehicles while veteran volunteers collect the flags, ensuring ease and efficiency during the drop-off. The event underscores a broader respect for the flag, especially poignant as Flag Day on June 14 approaches. "I ask you to bring your flag to us at our collection site so we can give your flag the respect it deserves," Sgt. Van, who serves as chair of the Veterans Best Practices Working Group, explained, as per the St. Charles County's news release.

Unable to attend the event on June 13? No problem. Flags are accepted year-round at dedicated drop boxes, found outside the County Administration Building at 201 N. Second Street, St. Charles, and at Veterans Tribute Park, located at 1031 Kisker Road, Weldon Spring. The St. Charles County Veterans Best Practices Working Group, launching in 2014 to support veterans' employment, continues its mission by also helping maintain the flag's honor in the community.
