The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office has issued an alert to local residents of a significant first responder presence at Fruit Cove Middle School due to scheduled training for potential active shooter and mass casualty events. In a statement on their official Facebook page, residents were informed that they "will see emergency vehicles and could hear sirens and gunfire," but were reassured this was part of the exercises, not an actual emergency situation.
Residents in the vicinity of the school may be subjected to the sights and sounds typically associated with critical incident responses. Deliberately, the activities, which include mock gunfire and the presence of multiple emergency vehicles, have been designed to create a realistic training environment for law enforcement and fire rescue personnel. According to the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office post, this simulation is critical for their ongoing readiness efforts to protect the community in the event of an actual incident.
The training, intended to prepare and hone the skills of the county's first responders, involves simulated scenarios that challenge participants to act swiftly and efficiently in highly stressful situations. Community members near Fruit Cove Middle School this week are encouraged to be aware of the simulation and not be alarmed by the scenario unfolding, which might otherwise be cause for panic had the Sheriff's Office not informed the public in advance.
