The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office is in mourning after the sudden death of a beloved member of their force, K9 Bane. The demise of the dog has cast a somber mood over the law enforcement community, primarily because of Bane's significant contributions and the tight-knit partnership he shared with his handler. The St. Johns Sheriff's Office announced Bane's passing, attributing his untimely death to "an unexpected and aggressive illness" that took the service animal on Tuesday.
Known affectionately as "Bubs" by his handler Deputy Robert Neigebauer, K9 Bane was not just any animal. Deputy Neigebauer and Bane, sharing a birthday, have woven themselves into the fabric of the community through their storied stints which include approximately 400 deployments, over 130 arrests, and 185 narcotics seizures. While serving, Bane's nickname "Bubs" could be heard echoing through work scenes, as Neigebauer prompted the K9 with phrases like, "Come on, bubs, what do you see, bubs, get that bad guy bubs," as mentioned by St. Johns Sheriff's Office.
Brought to life in Budapest, Hungary, Bane embarked on his journey as a full-service apprehension K9 with SJSO in 2018. Over the years, his unique bond with Deputy Neigebauer and his crime-fighting prowess made them one of the most respected K9 teams in Florida.
The St. Johns Sheriff's Office's social media post didn't just detail the achievements of K9 Bane. It depicted a shared life between a handler and his K9, stamped with moments of bravery, camaraderie, and selfless duty towards "serving and protecting the citizens of St. Johns County". In their shared career, Bane's ability to sniff out danger went beyond duty; each signal to "get that bad guy" wasn't just a command, it was an echo of their shared mission to make a community safer.
