The City of St. Louis is forging ahead with efforts to assist residents in the wake of the May 16 tornado, enhancing the availability of recovery resources this week. The city, in partnership with various organizations, continues to operate the Disaster Assistance Center (DAC) housed at the Chaifetz Arena from today through Wednesday between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m., as stated on the City of St. Louis' website. Although walk-ins are accepted, residents are urged to book appointments via the website or by dialing 211 to expedite the process.
Drawing more than 1,200 households in its inaugural week, the DAC has become a cornerstone for those seeking help. Meanwhile, the St. Louis Housing Authority is set to hold the Home Again: Rehousing Recovery Fair tomorrow from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The fair, which aims to connect displaced residents with housing providers, requires registration available through the SLHA's website. Further resident support comes from both FEMA and the SBA, responding to a Federal Disaster Declaration, which are providing various forms of aid, including low-interest disaster loans.
Individuals affected by the disaster may apply to FEMA for assistance online or via phone, while the SBA has established a Business Recovery Center for hands-on aid in the application process for business owners and non-profits. The center, located at the St. Louis Community College's Harrison Education Center, is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and also accommodates walk-ins. The deadline for applications to both FEMA and the SBA is August 11, a date rapidly approaching for those in need.
Adding to the City of St. Louis' efforts, three Requests for Proposals (RFPs) have been released. These RFPs cover critical services including general contractor and program management services necessary for emergency stabilization of tornado-damaged buildings, and the destruction of water taps in up to 50 residential buildings. With the August 11 deadline looming over the horizon, the clock ticks for residents to secure the help on offer.
