U.S. Border Patrol agents in the San Diego Sector hit a significant roadblock in the war on drugs, unearthing a sophisticated smuggling tunnel stretching from Tijuana to areas near San Diego. The subterranean passageway, which had yet to be completed, spanned over 1,000 feet into U.S. territory and was refined with essential infrastructure for illicit activities.
The San Diego Sector Tunnel Team made the discovery in early April, when the tunnel was actively being dug out. While inspecting under the Otay Mesa Port of Entry, the agents stumbled upon the tunnel, which was concealed with makeshift barricades - seemingly installed to slow down the agents' probing, if not their progress, in determining the tunnel's true beginning. According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the tunnel boasted electrical systems, ventilation, lighting, and a track system for moving large quantities of narcotics.
The full extent of the tunnel was carefully mapped by agents, revealing a length of 2,918 feet and a depth reaching 50 feet below ground at certain points. Its dimensions were relatively narrow, with a height of 42 inches and a width of 28 inches. Following the discovery, efforts concentrated on identifying the entrance, leading to a residential property in Tijuana's Nueva neighborhood where Mexican authorities executed a search warrant, finding the cleverly disguised tunnel entrance beneath freshly tiled flooring.
Jeffrey D. Stalnaker, Acting Chief Patrol Agent of the San Diego Sector, amplified the gravity of the situation in his remarks, "As we continue to strengthen the nation’s air, and maritime border security, it’s not surprising that foreign terrorist organizations would resort to underground routes," he said. His commendations for the Tunnel Team agents weren't just for their thorough investigation, but for their bravery as they navigated this descent into the clandestine pathways beneath our feet. Stalnaker's statement, acquired by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, noted the critical nature of disrupting drug smuggling operations to protect American lives.
