As Juneteenth ushers in celebrations and reflections on the end of slavery in the United States, the City of Surprise is adjusting its services in observance of the holiday. City of Surprise officials announced that administrative offices will be closed on Thursday, June 19, and city-run operations like trash collection, libraries, and recreational programs will follow modified schedules.
Specifically, trash pickup for City of Surprise sanitation customers will be delayed by a day, skipping Thursday service and resuming on Friday, June 20. Residents are being reminded, by sending out weekly reminders about the rescheduled pickup, can be kept in the loop if they sign up for notifications via text or email through the MySurprise App, which is accessible through both Apple and Android app stores, or at surpriseaz.gov/MySurprise. It's important to note that this schedule adjustment does not apply to all Surprise residents, so checking with your individual service provider is recommended for those not utilizing City of Surprise sanitation services.
Library hours for the three City of Surprise locations are seeing a change for the holiday as well. While the Surprise Regional and Asante Libraries will operate from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Hollyhock Library will wrap up earlier, closing its doors at 3 p.m. For city parks and recreation, programming is off the table for Thursday, June 19, but the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Center keeps its gates open, albeit briefly, from 6:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. For families looking to make a splash, the city's pool hours are staying consistent; details on open swim times can be found at surpriseaz.gov/Aquatics.
With festivities around the corner, the public is encouraged to follow City of Surprise on various social media platforms like Facebook at @CityofSurprise and Instagram at @SurpriseAZGov for updates and answers to any arising questions regarding the aforementioned changes.
