The City of Southgate, Michigan, breathed a collective sigh of relief after a manhunt concluded with the capture of a suspect responsible for the shooting of two local police officers. The incident, which prompted a broad law enforcement response and a shelter-in-place order for residents, ended with 20-year-old Jeremiah Christian Kemp in custody. According to WWJ Newsradio, the officers are now in stable condition after being shot yesterday at the Village on the Park apartments.
As reported by ClickOnDetroit, Kemp was located following an intense manhunt, hiding in a nearby apartment complex. Although in custody, authorities continue to actively search for the weapon used in the shooting. "If anybody sees the gun, we don't want them to touch it. Just contact 911," stated Director of Public Safety Joe Marsh in an interview with ClickOnDetroit. The shelter-in-place order was lifted, enabling residents to once again move about freely.
The shooting occurred after Kemp was seen waving a gun before law enforcement arrived. A Code Red alert was sent out to residents advising them of the dangerous situation unfolding. CBS News Detroit reported that the officers responded to a call about a man with a gun in the apartment complex, leading to their arrival and subsequent shooting.
Marsh praised the concerted efforts of the multiple agencies involved in the operation, according to ClickOnDetroit. "This was an incredible partnership," he said, emphasizing the collaboration among federal, state, and local departments to quickly bring the event to a close.
