An armed standoff at a Monroe apartment complex ended with the suspect in custody and scheduled for a mental health assessment. The Monroe Police Department stated that at around 7:50 p.m. on Saturday, officers responded to a 911 call about a man firing an assault rifle from his balcony at Nottingham Apartments.
The situation escalated when 51-year-old David Chancey Lockhart, the suspect, retreated to his apartment and continued firing through the walls and floor. This led to the evacuation of the building. The Monroe Police Department’s Special Response Team and Hostage Negotiators were called to the scene. They used drone technology and non-lethal methods to detain Lockhart. He was then taken to Atrium Union for a mental health evaluation at 10:25 p.m. No injuries were reported.
According to the Monroe Police Department on their Facebook page, Lockhart is expected to face criminal charges after his release from medical care. Chief Bolen expressed relief that no one was injured and confirmed Lockhart would receive care from certified medical personnel. He also said, "I would also like to thank the Union County Sheriff’s Office, Union EMS, and Monroe Fire Department for their assistance." Details on the charges and Lockhart's motives have not been released.
