A tragic incident unfolded in Southeast Houston when a woman, believed to be in her 60s, was killed in her apartment after her grandson allegedly attacked her. The incident took place at the Bellfort Plaza apartments on Bellfort Avenue around 2:15 a.m. yesterday, as reported by Click2Houston. The woman, identified by the family as Lydia, was calling 911 when she was fatally stabbed, just days shy of her 66th birthday.
Upon arrival, police encountered the suspect, a 25-year-old man believed to suffer from schizophrenia and police said he was off his medication, according to the initial reports from the Houston Police Department. Adding to the evening's horrors, he began fighting with the officers before they took him into custody. The Houston Police Department stated that there were no signs of forced entry into the apartment, which suggested Lydia was acquainted with her attacker, and notably, the man did not reside at the premises.
In a statement obtained by KHOU 11, a homicide detective said the department is not officially releasing the relationship of the individuals involved, although family members confirmed to Michelle Choi that Lydia and the suspect were grandmother and grandson. Lydia was celebrated as being close to her family, being a grandmother to six other children.
