Tragedy struck a Santa Rosa neighborhood last Wednesday when two individuals were found dead at an apartment complex in what is believed to be a murder/suicide case. The Santa Rosa Police Department was dispatched to the 1500 block of Atlanta Court following a report of possible domestic violence. Upon their arrival at approximately 2:40 PM, officers were unable to make contact with the apartment's occupants but were informed by nearby residents about hearing potential gunshots before their arrival.
With communication efforts led by the SRPD Hostage Negotiations team ultimately proving unsuccessful, a decision was taken to deploy the SRPD Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT), supported by a SWAT medic from the Santa Rosa Fire Department. It was in a back bedroom around 4:30 PM that the SWAT officers discovered the bodies of a 24-year-old female and a 24-year-old male. According to Hoodline, the apartment complex was evacuated as a precaution during the operation.
Investigators from the SRPD Violent Crimes Investigations Team and Field Evidence Technicians took over the in-depth review of the scene, where multiple firearms were recovered, including an assault rifle believed to be used in the shooting. Sonoma County Coroner later identified the victims as Emily Hemming and Vicente Carrillo-Cedillo, both of whom had relocated from Southern California to Santa Rosa in 2022, and were involved in a dating relationship at the time of the incident. There were no previous documented instances of domestic violence associated with either of the deceased in Santa Rosa or Southern California.
The initial findings have driven detectives to the belief that Carrillo-Cedillo died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after fatally shooting Hemming multiple times. The case marks the city's eighth homicide and second murder/suicide in 2025.
