The Tacoma City Council is on the lookout for civic-minded individuals ready to shape their community's future, as they seek applicants to fill six open positions on the Human Services Commission. According to an announcement on the city's official website, there are five member spots and one youth position available, the latter open to those aged between 16 and 18.
Members of the Human Services Commission have the weighty task of reviewing and rating competitive funding applications while also crafting recommendations for human services funding. In a role steeped in public trust, they provide informed counsel to both the City Council and the city's staff on matters of human services and community wellness. The terms for the commission will kick in on October 1, 2025, save for the youth position, which will start a month earlier on September 1.
In an effort to reflect the rich tapestry of Tacoma's population, the Council has set its sights on creating a diverse body that truly represents the community it serves. The call is extended to individuals of various backgrounds, including BIPOC, LGBTQ+, people with disabilities, seniors, youths, immigrants, and refugees. Moreover, individuals who have firsthand experience with human services programs—be that benefitting from homelessness services, youth development, or those addressing substance use—are particularly encouraged to apply.
Those appointed to the positions will need to comply with state regulations, completing training provided by the Washington State Office of the Attorney General on the Open Public Meetings Act and Public Records Act, within 90 days of their appointment. This critical step ensures the gears of governance turn smoothly, in full view of the public eye they serve.
