A 38-year-old Tampa woman has been arrested following allegations of threatening violence at a local cigar lounge. The incident, taking place on Sunday, involved Bernida Smith, who reportedly made threats to shoot patrons after being asked to leave for bringing unauthorized alcohol into the establishment. According to Tampa Police, security guards intervened as Smith began to resist their ejection efforts.

Witnesses to the event observed Smith, who responded with threats to return and escalate the confrontation with a shotgun. Reportedly, the woman was seen parking her vehicle outside the lounge shortly thereafter, with the weapon in hand as she approached the entrance. Two guards employed by the cigar lounge disarmed Smith before she could carry out any of her threats, which prevented a potential tragedy. "The quick and courageous actions of the security guards, combined with the rapid response of our officers, prevented what could have been a devastating tragedy," said Chief Lee Bercaw, as he was patrolling the area.

Following the confrontation, authorities detained Smith and conducted a search which revealed two additional firearms in her possession. Subsequently, she has been charged with two felony counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, one felony count of shooting at within or into a building, and one misdemeanor count of improper exhibition of a dangerous weapon or firearm.

"This incident is a reminder of the importance of strong partnerships between officers and our community, and their actions are a testament to the shared responsibility of keeping Tampa safe," in a statement by Chief Bercaw, which was obtained by Tampa Police Department.
