An officer-involved shooting in Sweetwater is under scrutiny as the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation probes the circumstances that led to a Madisonville police officer shooting a man yesterday. According to WATE, Monroe County deputies responded to a report of a man having what was described as a "mental episode" on the 100 block of Camp Hill Road at approximately 12:55 a.m.

Negotiations reportedly fell through after the man, who initially brandished a weapon at deputies and then barricaded himself inside the home, was unresponsive to law enforcement’s attempts to peacefully resolve the situation. The decision to deploy tear gas was made to draw the individual out, according to details from WBIR. The situation escalated when the man exited his residence and fired a shot, prompting the return fire from an officer.

The yet unnamed individual was struck by the officer's bullet and, following the incident, officers on scene immediately began life-saving measures until Emergency Medical Services arrived. He was then transported to a hospital, and his current condition remains undisclosed. No officers were injured during the exchange, as highlighted in WVLT News.

The TBI's investigation is standard procedure in the occurrence of an officer-involved shooting, with the findings to be reported to the district attorney general, who will determine if or what charges may be appropriate. The 10th Judicial District Attorney General Stephen Hatchett specifically requested the TBI to take charge of the investigation, as noted by WATE
