The Metropolitan Police Department has reported an arrest in connection with a devastating hit-and-run incident that left a man dead early last month. The accident happened in Northwest Washington, and since then, authorities have been piecing together the circumstances that led to this tragedy.
It was early May 7 when Third District officers arrived at the scene, at the intersection of 12th Street and U Street, Northwest, following reports of a crash around 4:15 a.m., as originally reported by MPD. There, they found 55-year-old Donnel Bracket Phillips, from Northeast DC, lying in the roadway, unconscious and not breathing. Transported to an area hospital in the wake of being struck by a vehicle, despite all lifesaving efforts, he was pronounced dead.
Investigations indicated the pedestrian had been within a marked crosswalk when he was hit by what is believed to be a white Hyundai Santa Fe. Following the incident, the responsible vehicle left the scene, prompting law enforcement to conduct thorough inquiries into the case.
Efforts led to an arrest made on June 24. Kyree Young, a 17-year-old from Southeast DC, now faces charges as an adult for First Degree Murder while Armed, under a DC Superior Court arrest warrant. However, as emphasized by the MPD, the case is still active, and the department encourages anyone with information to come forward. Those who possess knowledge of the events could be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000 if their information leads to further arrests and indictment, details provided by the police department's statement.
