A tragic incident unfolded in the Bronx's Starlight Park as a teen was shot and killed during what began as a playful encounter. Darrell Harris, a 17-year-old boy, was involved in a water gun fight yesterday evening as reported by News 12 The Bronx, which escalated when he confronted an individual who had sprayed him — leading to him being shot in the head and right arm around 8:15 p.m., he was pronounced dead after being taken to NYC Health & Hospitals Jacobi.
The New York Police Department is currently searching for the suspect, described as wearing a dark hoodie, black sweatpants and a black face mask and was last seen fleeing north on Sheridan Boulevard, the investigation into this fatal shooting remains active, authorities are working to uncover a possible motive for the crime, this as the city witnesses a surge in teen-related gun violence, with victims under the age of 18 increasing by 133% since 2018, as per NYPD figures previously cited.
"The Bronx is bleeding, and I’m doing everything in my power to make it stop," Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark was quoted in a Gothamist article, following recent efforts to arrest 19 individuals in connection with a series of shootings; Darrell's death marks the 15th teen to die in a New York City shooting this year. The statement came in the wake of a call by city officials for a reassessment of judicial approaches to juvenile offenders, in light of a disturbing trend of increased shootings involving minors.
