A tragic shooting on Detroit's west side has claimed the life of a 15-year-old boy and wounded his 13-year-old sister, according to local authorities. ClickOnDetroit reports the incident happened near Schoolcraft Road and Mark Twain Street, around 5:30 p.m. yesterday. The police believe the suspect had prior connections to the victims, although a clear motive has not yet been established.
The Detroit News shared additional details about the event, stating that the shooting occurred inside the teens' residence. Adults and other children were present at the time of the shooting, and while the suspect is not yet in custody, they are believed to be known to the victims' family. In a briefing near the scene, Detroit Police Capt. Marcus Thirlkill stated, "The motive for this tragedy is still unclear at this time." The teen was pronounced dead after being transported to a hospital, and his sister sustained a graze wound.
A joint response to this incident, as well as other recent shootings, seems to be building momentum. U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib, among others, reintroduced legislation aimed at reducing gun deaths among children, mandating secure firearm storage upon purchase. Following on the heels of this federal initiative, The Detroit News also reported that the Michigan Senate passed gun safety bills that include a ban on bump stocks and ghost guns.
