A grim scene unfolded in Tooele as a 21-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder following a fatal stabbing at his residence, police reported. The suspect, Isaac Daniel Gary Smith, was taken into custody after he contacted authorities, claiming he had retaliated against an attack by a "family member's friend," stating he had "stabbed his a--," according to ABC4.
Further investigation revealed a bloody trail leading from the victim, found on the streets, through the porch and into the residence where the stabbing allegedly took place, as Tooele police pieced together the sequence of events leading up to the tragic incident, they discovered the victim's wallet inside a backpack in his car, which portrays a different story from the one the suspect called in, as reported by KUTV.
As obtained by KSL Newsradio, Smith's mother, who shared the residence with her son, confirmed that the victim was a childhood friend who visited occasionally, including the day of the incident, though the mother had left for work before the event occurred and reported no knowledge of any conflict between her son and the victim.
Neighbors were onlookers to an exhaustive investigation that stretched into the early morning, even though their proximity to the police station is a mere two houses away, they were unable to offer further details, not knowing quite what happened behind the closed doors of what was thought to be a quiet neighborhood home, according to KUTV.
Amidst the unfolding inquiry, it was revealed that both Smith and his mother had previously disclosed the young man's struggles with mental illness, with his mother expressing past fears for her safety due to violent outbursts that had not been officially reported before this fatal incident occurred. Smith remains detained at Tooele County Detention Center, where he awaits further legal proceedings, as noted by KUTV.
