In the early hours as Wynwood's nightlife was winding down, a situation escalated into bloodshed, leaving two dead and one wounded. The shooting, drawing on the resources of the Miami Police Department, erupted near Northwest 23rd Street, an area frequently bustling with patrons from nearby establishments, as reported by Local 10 News. Officer Mike Vega, speaking on behalf of the department, confirmed that a man, observed to be armed, and a woman were fatally injured during the incident and later pronounced dead at Jackson Memorial Hospital.
The third injured individual is a man who sustained a hand injury, expected to make a full recovery, although it remains uncertain whether this was a direct result of police action. The exact chain of events leading to the discharge of police firearms is still under investigation. Florida Department of Law Enforcement has taken the lead, as is customary with officer-involved shootings, according to the same source.
In response to the chaos encompassing the early morning scene, Vega offered critical guidance to bystanders in firearm situations, advising, "If you hear shots fired, seek low ground. Go to the ground, and if you have a chance to escape from wherever you are at, then by all means you should do that, but what is taught is you drop to the ground—that way you are less of a target," as obtained by Local 10 News.
Witnesses who observed the deadly events unfold are being interviewed for further insight into this emerging story. "We do have several witnesses who were on the scene, and they are at our station being interviewed to get more details," Vega told CBS News Miami. Miami Police has yet to disclose the identities or ages of the victims involved in yesterday morning tragedy.
