Local fruit lovers are in for a treat, as Macomb County has officially welcomed the start of the u-pick strawberry season. Leading the list of must-visit destinations is Verellen Orchards and Cider Mill, which has opened its fields to the public for a hands-on harvesting experience.
According to a recent update from the official Macomb County website, Verellen Orchards and Cider Mill is now open Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and on Saturdays and Sundays from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., offering early risers and weekend visitors ample time to enjoy the season.
For those unfamiliar with u-pick traditions, a few practical tips can enhance the experience. Given the nature of berry picking, visitors are advised to wear comfortable clothing that can handle a few stains, along with sturdy footwear. The activity may be messy, but the reward is well worth it. Additionally, as strawberry fields offer little shade, sunscreen is strongly recommended to protect against prolonged sun exposure.
Once the baskets are full, guests can cap off their visit at the Verellen retail store, which offers much more than just strawberries. Visitors can enjoy fresh cider, ice cream, and a wide variety of baked goods, including pies—ranging from classic apple to decadent French silk—along with doughnuts, muffins, and zucchini bread. Daily specials provide even more opportunities for a sweet ending to the day’s harvest.
Whether you're a Macomb County resident or planning a seasonal visit, u-pick strawberry season offers a flavorful and family-friendly outdoor activity. With several farms participating, the only decision left is which one to visit first.
