Last week, a precarious situation near the National Butterfly Center along the Rio Grande was swiftly diverted by U.S. Border Patrol agents. The incident, which took place on June 6, involved a person in distress in the river, who was at risk of drowning. Agents from the McAllen Station, trained in both enforcement and rescue, launched an urgent response to the scene at approximately 12:25 p.m. upon sighting a group suspected of illegal crossing.
During the intervention, an individual attempting to return to Mexico via the river encountered life-threatening difficulties. Despite the dangerous currents, the McAllen Riverine Unit was on hand to perform a vital water rescue. "Our agents are trained not only in law enforcement but also in life-saving techniques," Rio Grande Valley Sector Chief Patrol Agent Gloria I. Chavez stated in a release from U.S. Customs and Border Protection. "Today's swift response by our Riverine Unit demonstrates our commitment to preserving human life, regardless of circumstances," she added, acknowledging the inherent risks associated with the perilous river conditions.
The individual saved from the Rio Grande was rapidly assessed by an on-site Border Patrol Emergency Medical Technician following the rescue. Thereafter, they were conveyed to a local hospital for further medical evaluation to ensure their wellbeing. In concurrence with the life-saving efforts, the Border Patrol operation resulted in the detention of eight individuals as part of the enforcement action.
