Residents of Upper Arlington should brace for the hum of machinery and the spectacle of construction crews as Columbia Gas kicks off a major infrastructure overhaul this Spring. The project, which commenced earlier in 2025, is a response to federal mandates and involves replacing antiquated high-pressure gas lines with new steel pipes that feature enhanced safety measures. According to a recent update from the City of Upper Arlington, these pipelines will span 12, 16, and 20 inches in diameter and are intended to serve a wider geographical stretch beyond the community's borders.
Delving into specifics, the initial phase of this extensive project is scheduled to penetrate Upper Arlington's east side along Zollinger Road, sourced from the vicinity of OSU's west campus. Crews are then slated to march southward down North Star Road, pivot west on Ridgeview Road, soldier south again on Brandon Road before routing west on Northam Road to Northwest Boulevard. The necessity to sometimes split infinitive constructions, a minor transgression in today's flexible grammatical norms, can be overlooked as we dig into the details of these routes.
In addition to the subterranean work, two above-ground utility stations are included in the blueprint. Columbia Gas plans to both replace an existing station on Brandon Road and erect a new one on Ridgeview Road. While these structures are critical for maintaining the gas distribution network's operation, they also represent a visible change to the neighborhood landscape.
Conscious of the disruption such projects can incite, Columbia Gas has committed to keeping residents in the loop. They have pledged to regularly communicate via mailed updates and, to further appease community concerns, will be hosting public meetings prior to any work commencing. Sequential updates are also promised once the projects get underway. "Columbia Gas has relayed to the City its ongoing commitment to proactively engage with residents in the affected areas," the City of Upper Arlington's announcement elucidated. The intent here is clearly to not only just relay information but to also include, actively, residents in the conversation throughout the construction period.
