Utah State University isn't just a hub for education; it's a heavyweight in the state's economy, flexing serious financial muscle. An analysis by the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute, commissioned by the Utah System of Higher Education, spells out the big bucks behind the academic giant’s operations. According to USU Today, the institute's report tallied up USU's economic impact for FY2023, showcasing a support of $1.4 billion in GDP and a whopping $2.2 billion in total state sales.

USU's interim prez, Al Smith, didn't mince words about the university's role as a public servant and economic engine. "This study confirms that we are not only changing lives but also driving billions in economic impact across the state," Smith said, as per USU Today. He claimed USU’s actions in Utah justified the value of pouring funds into higher education. Meanwhile, the author of the report and senior education analyst Andrea Brandley noted the "ripple effects across Utah" that the institution's activities set off, from job creation to business support.

More than teaching and handing out degrees, USU's reach is felt in employment, research money, and beyond. With over 10,000 direct employees, it stands as Cache County's largest employer and doesn't stop there. Count the indirect and induced gigs, and USU backs over 17,000 jobs across Utah's landscape.

USU raked in $450 million in FY2023, mostly from Uncle Sam's wallet, per USU Today. That funding is no small change, holding up 6,665 jobs and contributing $518 million to GDP. Plus, it feeds into the school's total economic presence that spills over into broader societal wins.
