The Queen City is gearing up for another ace as the Charlotte Invitational is set to make its return this December at the Spectrum Center, with some of the biggest names in American tennis slated to appear. According to QC News, Venus Williams, a former World No. 1, is joining the lineup for this year's exhibition along with top-ranked American Taylor Fritz, with defending champions Madison Keys and Frances Tiafoe also returning to the court.
Charlotte's Spectrum Center will welcome the athletes on December 4, and after drawing over 16,000 fans last year, expectations are high. Speaking to WCNC, Will Pitts, CEO of the Charlotte Sports Foundation, said, "Last year validated that Charlotte is a tennis city, and we’re thrilled to build on that momentum with the return of this unparalleled event." Venus Williams, who isn't a stranger to Charlotte, having competed there in 2006 against sister Serena Williams, will be part of this year's notable pairings notwithstanding that this event marks a return of sorts to a city that previously witnessed the sibling rivalry.
While last year's event boasted the presence of Carlos Alcaraz, this year pivots to an all-American lineup. Frances Tiafoe, who famously donned a Charlotte Hornets jersey during last year's match, will make another appearance, humorously having remarked last year that "16,000 people came to watch me. Nobody cares about Carlos," as detailed by The Charlotte Observer. The jocular Tiafoe knew the crowd's affection for Alcaraz but remains a favorite in his own right.
With the ACC football championship just around the corner, the Charlotte Invitational looks to serve another round of high-caliber tennis to an already sports-charged weekend in the city, offering fans the chance to see some of the greatest talent on home soil before the gridiron action takes over. Tickets aren't yet on sale, however eager fans can sign up for pre-sale information at the event's official website, ensuring they don't miss what promises to be, yet again, an unforgettable athletic display.
