Check your egg cartons — a sizable recall is underway. The August Egg Company is pulling nearly 2 million cartons of eggs from shelves due to potential Salmonella contamination, affecting various Walmart stores across multiple states, including Arizona. In a report by ABC15, customers have been urged to return these eggs, which include brown cage-free and certified organic varieties, to their place of purchase for a refund.
Recalled eggs can be identified by the plant code number P-6562 or CA5330 and Julian Dates between 32 and 126, as stated by health officials. These eggs, which have sell by dates ranging from March 4 through June 19, 2025, were packaged in both fiber and plastic cartons, accidentally making surfaces that may have touched the eggs need to be washed thoroughly. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is also instructing consumers to avoid consuming the eggs and seeking medical attention if exhibiting symptoms after possible exposure.
Salmonella, the organism responsible for the outbreak, can lead to serious health issues, especially for specific vulnerable groups like young children and elderly individuals. According to the CDC, a total of 79 individuals have been infected with the outbreak strain spanning seven states, with 21 of these cases severe enough to require hospitalization, as reported by AZFamily. Thankfully, no fatalities have been reported in connection with the outbreak.
Salmonella symptoms typically include diarrhea, fever, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain, beginning six hours to six days after infection. Cases generally resolve within 4-7 days, but severe infections may necessitate hospitalization. The August Egg Company's recall spans not only Arizona but also California, Washington, Wyoming, Nevada, New Mexico, Nebraska, Indiana, and Illinois. The CDC warns that other retailers in California and Nevada have also been supplied with the affected eggs, as Washing any items or surfaces that may have been in contact with the eggs is essential to prevent further potential exposure.
For further details regarding the products involved in this recall and additional safety guidelines, the CDC has a full list of the recalled products and information on their website.
