Just one month after opening, a new park at 200 Trapelo Road in Waltham, Massachusetts, has implemented a parking reservation system due to high visitor numbers. According to NBC Boston, the park includes a playground, splash pad, and mini-golf course on the former site of the Walter E. Fernald Development Center. Visitors have traveled from across the state to enjoy the facilities.
In response to increased traffic and parking issues in the surrounding neighborhood, the city has added "No Parking" signs and weekend police patrols. Waltham City Councilor Bill Hanley told NBC Boston that a free two-hour parking reservation system is now in place to help manage capacity.
Boston.com reported that Kim Hebert, Waltham’s director of recreation, is cautious about promoting the park further due to the impact on nearby residents. Street parking is restricted on weekends and holidays, and visitors are required to reserve parking in advance and limit visits to two hours.
Before its opening, the park's location drew attention due to its history as the site of the first state school for people with intellectual disabilities. During the ribbon-cutting, some protesters highlighted this past. The city has acknowledged the site’s history and included a memorial and educational signage. The city stated its goal is to offer a space for all ages and abilities while honoring the past.
