A man wanted for multiple violations including assault on an officer, Dajshon Travis Asbell, was shot by Clay County deputies on June 20 and died from his wounds three days later. The Clay County Sheriff's Office in Florida had responded to the scene to serve arrest warrants when the incident escalated. The Sheriff's Office detailed the encounter in a recent social media post, explaining that Asbell had barricaded himself inside a utility shed and refused to surrender after hours of negotiation.
According to the account provided by the Sheriff's Office, their SWAT team deployed tear gas to force Asbell out, he emerged wielding an edged weapon and charged at deputies. Despite being shot, Asbell continued to resist arrest, prompting deputies to use less lethal rounds and a K9 unit to subdue him. After being detained, Asbell received medical treatment and was hospitalized. However, his injuries proved fatal and he passed away on June 23.
The investigation following the shooting is now under the joint purview of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) and the State Attorney's Office. The FDLE is expected to release further updates on the incident, as the Clay County Sheriff’s Office will not be handling the investigation from this point forward.
