The west side of Milwaukee is now home to the newest Monterrey Market, a family-run grocery that promises to offer a plethora of fresh food options to a community left wanting since the closure of Walmart in early 2024. The grand opening, which took place on Thursday, unveiled the market's third location at 7025 W. Main St. It occupies the space that once housed the big-box retailer and spans roughly 40,000 square feet within the area's 10th Aldermanic District.

Local leadership has expressed strong support for the new Monterrey Market, with Alderwoman Sharlen Moore sharing her excitement about the opening. "Yesterday I had the pleasure of joining Robert Montemayor, owner of Monterrey Market, to celebrate the grand opening of this new location," Moore said, according to a statement obtained by Milwaukee City. She continued, "Robert has been a fantastic partner to work with in the run-up to this grand opening and, I couldn’t think of a better use for this space than a local, family-owned business that is meeting a real need within the community." Moore cited the gap left by Walmart's departure and the neighborhood's desire for fresh produce, a gap that Monterrey Market seeks to fill.

Owner Robert Montemayor extended his gratitude toward supporters at the opening ceremony. "I would like to thank everyone who believed in us and supported us, including our loyal customers, dedicated staff, city leaders, and other partners," he told Milwaukee City. Montemayor emphasized the market's commitment, stating, "As we open the doors to this new store, we reaffirm our promise: to continue serving with heart, with purpose and with pride."

In addition to its sizable offerings of fresh produce, the market features a deli and bakery, along with a range of products from Latin America, inviting customers to explore flavors and culinary traditions that mirror the city's diverse population. The new Monterrey Market operates from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day, catering to the community's daily needs and providing an accessible source of quality foods and goods.
