Wisconsin is gearing up for a weekend dedicated to tackling an often overlooked threat to its natural beauty. The state's Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is hosting the Second Annual Invasive Species Awareness Weekend on June 21-22. According to the Wisconsin DNR, over 30 events are scheduled across Wisconsin, aiming to educate locals on the nonnative species that jeopardize the state's ecosystems and economy.
The initiative provides an array of activities suitable for all ages, intending not just to inform, but to arm participants with techniques to combat these intruders in their own backyards. Among the highlights are a 5K run/walk at the Kettle Moraine State Forest – Lapham Peak Unit, workshops on controlling invasive flora and fauna, and numerous educational programs. The DNR urges those participating in fieldwork to dress appropriately, wearing gloves, closed-toed shoes, and protective clothing that, can withstand the dirt and grime of the great outdoors.
Invasive species, defined by the DNR as nonnative plants, animals, and diseases, present a significant threat to public health, the economy, and the environment.
