A multi-vehicle collision on I-77 near Davidson, North Carolina, led to a chaotic scene this morning, resulting in injuries to 12 people. According to the QC News, the North Carolina Department of Transportation reported the incident took place just shy of noon, near mile marker 29, which cinches I-77 on a bridge stretched between Griffith Street and Catawba Avenue.
Emergency responders quickly worked to assess and aid those injured, with 12 individuals initially evaluated at the scene. The Mecklenburg EMS Agency informed QC News that "8 were taken to Atrium Carolinas Medical Center." The severity of the incident called for at least two ambulances and the MEDIC’s Mass Casualty Bus to respond swiftly to the situation.
As per a report from WCNC, traffic was significantly affected due to the crash, resulting in the closure of two southbound lanes on I-77. The incident took place around 11:50 a.m. at Mile Marker 29.2, and authorities had to divert traffic into the toll lane in an effort to manage the congestion. All those who were injured sustained only minor injuries according to initial assessments.
The collision involved multiple vehicles and caused not just physical but also commuter disruption during a peak hour. "One of three lanes was closed but expected to return to normal before 1 p.m.," reported The Charlotte Observer. DriveNC, the state's real-time traffic system, had also noted that visibility on the highway was obscured due to a trash bag on the road at the time of the crash, but it was quickly cleared.
