Monroe Police Department reported a swift response to an armed robbery on Sunday morning that resulted in the arrest of a 16-year-old suspect, Jakeem Mungo. The teenager was detained following the incident that took place near the J. Ray Shute Center on East Green Street around 11:15 a.m., as per a post on the Monroe Police Department's Facebook page. The victim was able to pinpoint Mungo, alleging that he was approached by a male who pointed a handgun at him and demanded personal property.
In a pursuit for the offender, Monroe police initiated a K9 unit to track the suspect. The department shared that Mungo exited a residence as police approached and surrendered without incident, pleading for the K9 not to be deployed. WBTV reports he was found with the property initially reported as stolen. Subsequently, a home search yielded the recovery of a firearm matching the victim's description, which was later confirmed as stolen from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's jurisdiction.
Mungo is being charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon. An offense of this gravity mandates that despite his age, he will be tried as an adult. He is currently residing in a juvenile detention facility, awaiting a judge to determine his conditions of release, as noted by QC News.
The local authorities emphasized the effectiveness of their response. "Monroe Police Department commends the swift work of its officers and will continue working diligently to bring offenders to justice and ensure the safety of our neighborhoods," stated an announcement from the Monroe Police Department.
