A 20-year-old man from Kea‘au, Lasty Jessy, was arrested after allegedly stealing a running car at Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport last Friday, injuring the car’s owner during the incident. He is facing multiple charges, including first-degree robbery and operating a vehicle under the influence, according to the Hawaii Police Department.
Two days later, police located the stolen Subaru in Hilo and attempted a traffic stop, which led to a pursuit. Jessy crashed the vehicle after running a red light, then tried to run away but was quickly arrested, causing lane closures and traffic delays, as reported by the Hawaii Police Department.
Jessy was arrested and charged with inattention to driving, reckless driving, and unlicensed operation of a vehicle. His bail was set at $194,000, and he was scheduled to appear in Hilo District Court on Tuesday. The Hawaii Police Department advised the public, “Always secure your vehicle. Never leave your car unlocked or running, even for a short time and are nearby.” The Area I Criminal Investigation Section of the Hawaii Police Department is continuing to investigate and is asking anyone who saw the incident to contact Detective Robert Kamau Jr.
