
A 13-year-old girl, identified as Aymira Thomas, was fatally shot at Ridgeline at Canton Apartments yesterday in what police describe as a tragic incident, and her 21-year-old brother has been taken into custody in connection with the shooting. The Canton Police Department confirmed to WWJ Newsradio that officers responded to a 911 call from the apartment complex located on Joy Rd. and Honeytree, east of Haggerty Rd. around 12:30 p.m. Where they discovered the young girl who had been shot, despite immediate efforts by the first responding officer and subsequent EMS intervention, the girl deceased from her injuries.
Police have not disclosed details surrounding the circumstances that led to the gunfire yet, but they have assured the public that there is no ongoing threat to the community. The area of the apartment will remain closed for investigation, as per ClickOnDetroit.
In a heart-wrenching interview given to FOX 2 Detroit, Christina, Aymira's sister, shared memories of her as "amazing," with "great confidence" and as being "just like a goofball" who was "so kind and so sweet," Christina was struck by the abruptness of the tragedy, stating, "It was unexpected. This was all unexpected. We was just at my house last night. We was watching movies."
While the family grapples with the sudden loss, Canton Township Deputy Chief Joseph Bialy expressed his concern regarding the unsecured firearm that led to Aymira’s death; further details have yet to be disclosed, the community has also been prompted to lend support through a GoFundMe page opened in Aymira's honor, "I am going to miss her waking up and coming in my room, or I am going to miss them ramshaking through my closet, stealing everything because they always do," Christina said in an emotional account conveyed to FOX 2 Detroit, revealing the depth of her grief.
