A tragic incident occurred on the Kalamazoo River near Allegan Dam last Friday evening when a 29-year-old man drowned. The Allegan County Sheriff's Office reported receiving a 911 call at approximately 8:06 p.m. alerting them to a person who had fallen into the river and had not resurfaced, as per WZZM13.
Both the Allegan County Dive Team and the Allegan Fire Department responded to the emergency call and initiated a search for the missing individual. According to the FOX17 online report, another person also fell into the river but managed to cling onto a tree and awaited help. The dive team discovered the man close to where he had originally submerged soon after their arrival, the rescue attempts to revive him, unfortunately, fell short.
The Sheriff's Office indicated that the initial investigation suggested the incident took place while several people were fishing in waist-deep water amidst a strong current. "The sheriff's office says that multiple people were standing in waters that were waist deep while fishing in a strong current that pushed them downstream," as noted by WOODTV.
