The Metropolitan Police Department has put out an urgent call for assistance in locating 24-year-old suspect Charles Rucker of Southeast D.C., who has been identified in relation to the tragic shooting that led to the death of 3-year-old Honesty Cheadle. The young girl succumbed to a gunshot wound she received when gunfire broke out early on July 5, according to Fox 5 DC. Despite the efforts of emergency services, who rushed Cheadle to a local hospital for critical injuries, the young girl passed away two days later.
Honesty was in a parked vehicle with her family after watching fireworks when the incident occurred. Authorities have released Rucker's photo to the public, urging anyone with information to reach out. A reward of up to $50,000 is on the table for details leading to his apprehension, obtaining justice not only for Honesty but also for a family and community rocked by her loss, as reported by WUSA9. Meanwhile, the family grieves and contends with the unbearable weight of their new reality.
With a profound sense of despair, Honesty's aunt and legal guardian, Tamika Butler, has turned to the community for support through a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for funeral costs. "This is every family’s worst nightmare," Butler shared on the fundraising site, seeking a "peaceful, beautiful homegoing service" for their beloved Honesty. The crowdfunding initiative aims to foster a semblance of solace through collective action.
In a heartbreaking testament to the sorrow they face, the family disclosed an unsettling layer to their tragedy: they knew the accused, Charles Rucker, before the events that stole Honesty from them, 7News learned. The family also expressed their dismay and frustration over the lack of outreach from local leaders, including the Mayor's office and their council representative, Charles Allen, in the aftermath of the loss, deepening their sense of isolation in the face of such a stark episode of violence.
As the search for Rucker continues, the family appeals for justice. "Please turn yourself in… Her blood is on your hands and your hands alone," implored Tamika Butler, whose pain is compounded by the justice yet unserved. Community members with any knowledge that could lead to Rucker’s apprehension are urged to come forward by contacting police at 202-727-9099 or texting a tip at 50411.
