A tragic turn of events unfolded on I-95 in Indian River County, Florida, where a 77-year-old Vermont man lost his life while trying to save a turtle. The Florida Highway Patrol reported that the accident occurred around 4:20 p.m. yesterday. According to ClickOrlando, the man crossed the southbound lanes to reach a turtle that had strayed onto the road.
The highway patrol explained how two vehicles driving in the center lane became involved in the incident, which eventually led to the man's death. The first vehicle managed to slow down in an attempt to avoid hitting the man. However, the following car, a 2020 Dodge Ram, could not slow down in time and collided with the first, sending it into the man. The FHP stated that the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Meanwhile, WESH reported that this incident led to a significant traffic delay, with hundreds of vehicles brought to a standstill for hours while the scene was investigated and cleared. It was not until four hours after the accident, around 8:30 p.m., that two lanes were reopened to southbound traffic on I-95.
