An elderly woman tragically lost her life on Saturday evening after being hit by a vehicle driven by a suspected DUI driver in Huntington Beach. The Huntington Beach Police Department identified the victim as 85-year-old Caryl Margulies, who had earlier been reported missing.
The collision occurred near Brookhurst Street and Crailet Drive around 6:00 p.m. Officers arriving at the scene found Margulies unconscious and immediately transported her to a hospital. Despite medical attempts, she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The statement released by the Huntington Beach Police Department offered no comment on whether impairment was a factor for Margulies at the time of the incident.
The driver, a 62-year-old Costa Mesa man, whose name has not been released, stayed at the scene and was taken into custody on suspicion of DUI. Investigations are leading to the understanding that his white Toyota RAV4 was traveling northbound when it made contact with the pedestrian south of Crailet Drive.
The Huntington Beach Police's Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team is looking into the events that led to this unfortunate incident. They urge anyone with information related to the collision to reach out. Witnesses or individuals with relevant details are encouraged to contact HBPD Traffic Investigator C. Houlston at (714) 536-5559 to aid the ongoing investigation.
