A tragic incident unfolded yesterday morning in the Homecrest section of Brooklyn, as a 90-year-old man was fatally struck by a moped. According to ABC7NY, the victim, identified as Zhuo Xie of 2255 East 15th Street in Brooklyn, was crossing at the intersection of East 14th Street and Avenue U when he was hit. Officials stated that he suffered severe head trauma and was later pronounced dead at NYU Langone Health, Brooklyn.
The NYPD reports that Mr. Xie was in the crosswalk but did not have the light in his favor when the accident occurred. The moped, described as blue and was traveling southbound, had a green light to go through the intersection. Despite this, the operator chose to unfortunately leave the scene, and police are actively investigating the hit-and-run incident. This information was reconfirmed by a separate report from PIX11.
The initial call to NYPD about the accident came in around 9:30 a.m. The collision led to emergency services transporting the elderly man to the hospital where he could not survive the injuries sustained. As the local community reels from this loss, authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward to assist with the ongoing investigation.
No description of the moped rider has been provided yet, and neither have eyewitness accounts or potential footage from nearby security cameras been disclosed.
