An alleged member of a Mexican drug trafficking organization has been extradited to the United States to face charges in the Western District of Texas. Hector Adrian Rojero Ramos, also known by the alias "Teto," was transferred following his arrest in Mexico on June 25, the U.S. Attorney's Office reported. Ramos, 54, is facing charges connected to a conspiracy to import and distribute heroin and fentanyl across various parts of the U.S., including Texas, Oklahoma, and Illinois, from January 2016 through August 2019.
Following the extradition, Ramos made his initial appearance in federal court in El Paso on June 27. The indictment includes one count of conspiracy to import a controlled substance, one count of conspiracy to commit offenses with intent to distribute a controlled substance, and two counts of aiding and abetting possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance. "A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors," according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
U.S. Attorney Justin R. Simmons for the Western District of Texas was the one who made the announcement regarding Ramos' extradition. The case is currently under the investigation of the Drug Enforcement Administration and the FBI. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jose Luis Acosta is leading the prosecution.
This particular case falls under the umbrella of Operation Take Back America, a Department of Justice initiative focused on curbing illegal immigration, dismantling cartels, and addressing violent crime. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the operation "marshals the full resources of the Department of Justice to repel the invasion of illegal immigration, achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and protect our communities from the perpetrators of violent crime." It utilizes resources from the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) for enhanced coordination and effectiveness.
