
Angela J. Green steps into the Commissioner role of the Chicago Department of Family & Support Services with a toolkit sharpened by over two decades of human services administration. Today, Mayor Brandon Johnson officially appointed Green, who most recently spearheaded federal human services operations across a swath of the Midwest, marking a significant shift in leadership for an agency pivotal to the welfare of Chicago's families.
In an announcement obtained by the City of Chicago's official press release, Johnson described Green's extensive background, emphasizing "her career-long commitment to forging equitable, whole family solutions which drive lasting impact for vulnerable populations." This unparalleled knowledge and expertise come at a crucial time, considering the city's multifaceted challenges, including homelessness and youth employment.
Responding to her appointment, Green expressed enthusiasm about strengthening the partnerships between the city and local communities. "I'm honored by this appointment and grateful for the opportunity to serve the people of Chicago," she said, underscoring her commitment to the dignity, accountability, and opportunity for every family that DFSS aims to provide. Her former role as a Regional Administrator for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services had Green fostering transformative projects that improved service delivery considerably.
Acting Commissioner Maura McCauley backed Green's selection, pointing out the depth of her experience as a "compassionate human services leader" and her successful track record. Green's efforts in the public and private sectors have been pivotal in confronting the complexities of service delivery. A showcase of her past initiatives at ACF includes the Annual Midwest Economic Mobility Summit and strategies for preventing homelessness, aimed at boosting economic mobility and supporting whole-family well-being.
Prior roles highlighted her prowess in modernizing Indiana’s child welfare infrastructure and launching the state's inaugural community-based child abuse prevention initiative. Angela Green, fortified with a Master of Social Work from Indiana University and as a Senior Executive Fellow with Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government, brings a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical application to the forefront of Chicago's efforts to empower and support its residents and families.
