Anoka County's innovative "Bike to the Fair" program is rolling back into town, and this time it's bringing along some national acclaim. Launched in a partnership between Anoka County Commute Solutions and the Anoka County Fair, the service provides a free and secure spot for fairgoers who opt to bike to the event, as reported by Anoka County. Riders who arrive at the fair on wheels from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., on Tuesday, July 22 (Kids Day), or on Saturday, July 26, can pedal their way past the admission gates without reaching for their wallets, thanks to the on-site Bike Valet service.
Earning first place in the Community Impact Award category from the International Association of Fairs and Expositions, the program is lauded for reducing traffic congestion and spotlighting the values of active transportation. The Bike Valet isn't just about secure bike parking—it's an initiative actively shaping a community's approach to health and sustainability. "This is a win-win for families and the environment," Laurie Eggers, program coordinator at Anoka County Commute Solutions, told Anoka County.
To encourage safe and convenient biking, there's a clear recommendation: use side streets, sidewalks, and signalized intersections when mapping out the cycling route to the fairgrounds. With the biking infrastructure needing a boost near the fair location, this suggestion aims to foster a smoother and safer journey for family units and solo cyclists alike. As a proactive nudge, the organizers highly recommend donning helmets as well.
As another perk for participants, an information booth will be set up, dishing out free commuting resources, kid-centric activities, and giveaways to elevate the fair experience. The goal? Transforming the trip to the fair into an engaging, eco-conscious adventure. For those planning to secure their bikes in the valet, registration is advised. An early sign-up via the Anoka County page ensures your two-wheeler won't be left out during the fair festivities.
