In a recent decision that has sent shockwaves through the state of Arizona, Senate Republicans have pushed through a significant spending bill that critics argue services the wealthiest at the expense of the general populace. Among the most outspoken opponents is Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, who is calling on citizens to take action against legislation he describes as preferential to billionaires.
According to a statement obtained by Kelly's Senate page, the bill would lead to over 300,000 Arizonans losing their healthcare and a reduction in food assistance, alongside fostering job losses in the renewable energy sector. Kelly did not mince words when he stated that this move by his Republican colleagues would "throw more than 300,000 Arizonans off their health care," while simultaneously accentuating the national debt by nearly $4 trillion, just to "give a tax break to the wealthiest Americans."
Throughout the legislative process, Kelly introduced amendments to redistribute the financial relief. "We offered amendment after amendment to make this bill better, to make rich people pay their fair share while giving tax cuts to the middle class, to keep health care coverage and food assistance for working people, to protect clean energy jobs," Kelly said. Despite his efforts, these proposed adjustments were uniformly rejected by the Republicans.
Senator Kelly's vigorous advocacy on this issue comes after months of engaging firsthand with his constituents across Arizona, from Phoenix to Sierra Vista. During his travels, he gathered stories from Arizonans, which he brought directly to the Senate floor. Kelly's stance is clear: this bill is construed to directly benefit the wealthy elite. "The choice in today's vote was clear: support working families or give handouts to billionaires," he argued, condemning the Republicans' choice to support the latter. As the bill stands on the precipice of becoming law, pending the House's decision, Kelly urges Americans to take a stand and "call your representative."
