Capitol Police on routine patrol apprehended a 23-year-old Oregon man, Nolan R. Churan, after discovering an array of weapons in his vehicle parked illegally on Capitol Grounds. According to the USCP, the Subaru Outback, distinguished by the odd sight of a large tricycle atop its roof, lacked the requisite permit for its parking spot along the 200 block of Pennsylvania Avenue, NW. Inside the vehicle, officers noted a bow & arrow, knives, and a vacant pistol holster — elements foreshadowing a more troubling inventory.
Upon further investigation, the USCP Crime Scene Evidence Specialists, accompanied by the DC Metropolitan Police Department’s K-9 unit, unearthed a stash of weapons including a rifle, a handgun, several knives, axes, a halberd, a rapier sword, and the previously sighted bow & arrow. Along with these, they found copious amounts of ammunition. As stated in the USCP press release, Churan was not previously known to the Capitol Police, and at this point, there seems to be no connection of his intentions to Congress.
Churan now faces serious legal repercussions for his possession of the unlabeled weapons and ammunition. The charges listed against him include Unlawful Activities, Carrying a Pistol Without a License, Carrying a Rifle Without a License, Carrying a Dangerous Weapon - Sword, Possession of a High-Capacity Ammunition Feeding Device, Unregistered Firearm, and Unregistered Ammunition. In the wake of the incident, the Capitol Police's Threat Assessment Section is delving into Churan's background, seeking to ascertain his motives for being on Capitol Grounds with such an arsenal.
