On Friday evening, a scene unfolded near Broadway Road and Mesa Drive in Mesa as law enforcement responded to a report of a man with a gun. According to ABC15, multiple individuals reported seeing a man banging on apartment doors while armed. Responding, Mesa police officers arrived shortly after 5 p.m. to confront the individual. The situation escalated quickly into an officer-involved shooting, with the suspect ending up in the hospital in stable condition.
Mesa police officials reported that two officers demanded that the man comply with their orders, which he refused to adhere to. In the moments that followed, one officer chose to discharge their firearm, striking the man. "When officers got to the scene, they located the man who was still armed with a gun," ABC15 provided in their coverage of the incident. The aftermath of the event saw no other injuries, though details on whether the man brandished his weapon at officers have not been disclosed.
FOX 10 Phoenix added context to the account, explaining that "the 30-year-old suspect was transported to a hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds and is listed in stable condition," as per a statement made by Detective Richard Giles. The officer involved in the shooting reportedly had less than five years of service with the Mesa Police Department. The handgun carried by the suspect was subsequently recovered at the scene.
Amid the ongoing investigation, little has been publicly released about the identities of both the suspect and the officer involved in the Friday shooting. To maintain a thorough and unbiased inquiry into the matter, the Gilbert Police Department—under the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team—is now leading the investigation. "The critical force incident is being investigated by the Gilbert Police Department under the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team," Detective Giles told FOX 10 Phoenix. Further developments are likely to follow as the Gilbert PD delves deeper to conclusively determine the sequence of events that transpired.
